The XFL Summer Showcase concluded over the weekend, and it seems that XFL DC Head Coach Pep Hamilton is hitting the ground running. Hamilton and SVP of Football Operations, Doug Whaley have been out looking at potential practice facilities for the DC franchise.

First we learned that Hamilton and Whaley were visiting Bowie State University via the official Twitter account of XFL DC. Bulldogs Stadium, home for the Bowie State football program, features a synthetic turf playing surface and has a seating capacity of 2,964. The stadium opened a new stadium field house in Spring 2015 and features two locker rooms and shower facilities.

Scenes from today’s potential practice facility visits!

📍 @BowieState pic.twitter.com/WnmGEZKxq9

We then learned that the next stop was at the facilities of University of Maryland. Capitol One Field at Maryland Stadium is the home of the Maryland Terrapins football and men’s lacrosse teams, which compete in the Big Ten Conference.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"

The facility was formerly named Byrd Stadium after Harry “Curley” Byrd. Byrd was a multi-sport athlete, football coach, and university president in the first half of the 20th century. In 2006, naming rights were sold to Chase Bank, which was subsequently acquired by Capital One. In 2015, the Byrd Stadium name was removed, with the stadium being renamed Maryland Stadium

Either of these facilities would be grate choices for the league. That being said, we are slightly leaning towards the franchise choosing the facilities located at UofMaryland.

In the spirit of keeping the momentum going, Oliver Luck and newly announced Coach/GM of the XFL DC franchise, Pep Hamilto,n joined The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan. Here is quick recap of what was discussed, including some information we’re hearing for the first time.

Luck stated that we should know the team names/logos around late March/early April. He also stated that they WILL NOT participate in any sort of fan voting, stating legal issues that they would like to avoid.

He also once again confirmed that they will hold a draft and the players would not be limited by region. reiterated that the XFL would not bring over the gimmicks from the old 2001 iteration, specifically mentioning the scramble and the jersey nicknames.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"
data-ad-slot=""
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

Pep mentioned that the rule book is still in the works, and they aren’t going to limit themselves to stick to a certain type of play. Luck mentioned that there will be three extra point options after a touchdown. There will be a one, two, and three point option, none of which utilize a kicker. Field goals will still be in the game.

In regards to TV deals, Luck mentioned what we’ve already reported, two of the four weekly games will be televised. Two will air on terrestrial television, and two on cable networks that fans will know and respect. He is still unsure if the draft will be televised.

Hamilton chose this job because he likes the challenge around building a team from the ground up. He interviewed once for a head coach job with the Raiders in 2014, which he said helped him prepare for the process with the XFL. Hamilton specifically mentions Luck as one of the main reasons he decided to join the XFL.

The XFL will start signing players in the spring and throughout the summer. Players who sign will be asked that they not play in the fall. The first draft will take place after the initial NFL cut-down in early September. In regards to training camps, they are planning on having at least a couple of months to gel the offenses and defenses for each franchise.

Quarterbacks will be paid $400 to 600k, which is significantly more than what was previously reported. Luck said they want to lure “quality quarterbacks”. He thinks the XFL will be attractive to backups and practice squad players that don’t have a chance to play on a regular basis.

Another new revelation came about in regards to player contracts. We were previously told that all players would be on a one year contract. Now is looks like there is multiple tiers, Luck now states that top level players will have multi-year, exclusive contracts.

Today’s press conference was a bit shorter than the one we had in Dallas, but let’s go through everything that happened.

First DC Events Board Member, Ty Simpson, came out to talk about the local area and how it’s a perfect fit for the XFL. He mentioned that they had done they due diligence before submitting themselves as a potential location. Simpson went on to say that when they look at bring an organization into their city they want to make sure that it will be an established family friendly environment. He also praised Vince McMahon and Oliver Luck on the progress they’ve made so far.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"
data-ad-slot=""
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

Oliver Luck then came out and gave a brief update on the state of the XFL. The most notable of which is that he once again confirmed that TV deals should be announced soon. He also said that four games will be televised weekly. Two on over the air terrestrial television, and two on cable, which he iterated would be networks that are easy to find and known and respected by sports fans. We previously reported that the XFL was in talks with ABC/ESPN and Fox/FS1, which align perfectly with what he is saying.

Luck then went on to talk a bit about Pep Hamilton. He brought up that Hamilton has over a decade of coaching experience. Specifically bringing up the Jets, Colts, 49ers, Stanford and Michigan, where he was most recently Assistant Coach to Jim Harbaugh. Luck then spoke about Hamilton’s career at Howard University down the road from Audi Field. He touched on his on-hands experience with Quarterbacks, naming Jay Cutler, Brian Greese and even his son Andrew Luck. At that time he then welcomed Pep Hamilton to the XFL and invited him on stage.

Pep came out and first thanked his Wife and family back in Michgan, then thanks all his friends and family that came out from Howard University to support him. Hamilton said he was intrigued by the XFL once he heard that Oliver Luck had been named the CEO and Commissioner ,stating that Luck has the know-how needed to jump start a league. He also said that Luck he had the Midas touch in regards to how he raised his children.

Because of Luck’s role with the XFL, his decision was easy to make. He loved the idea that he was able to take on such a challenge of not only building a team from the ground-up, but also working with the community to make the fan experience enjoyable.

Hamilton then stated he would be looking for people like himself why building the team, and more importantly building the league. He wants to find people that have the same passion for football as he shares, and wants to find players that are able to think outside of the box.

That was about it for this press conference, but it sounds like we’re going to get another one next week in Seattle, and possible one each week afterwards. Word on the Streets is that it’s going to be Jim Zorn, so far we’re two for two, hopefully next week we can extend our record. Regardless, by the end of March we should know all of the coaches in the league.

You can watch the full press conference below:
