Yes. Money is a key factor, and by way of McMahon’s wallet, the XFL has a lot of it. It’s been reported that the second coming of the XFL is funded for at least three seasons. If true, it puts them in a much better position than the original and light years ahead of the AAF before kickoff. The numbers vary depending on who you ask, but we estimate the league has $500-700M in backing. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s look at the reasons the new XFL will last longer than the original, the AAF and the USFL.

Broadcast Partners

Although the deals are similar, they are also very very different. Let’s start with the similarities; simply put, the XFL will not be receiving rights fees from networks. That being said the broadcast partners will be footing the bill for the production costs. That comes out to roughly $500,000 per game.

The AAF showed potential drawing a little over 2 million viewers for its debut broadcast on CBS. Unfortunately for the league, the subsequent weeks would be aired on CBS Sports, NFL Network or via the Bleacher Report application. Luckily for the XFL, this is not an issue they will need to overcome. Every XFL game will be aired on ABC, ESPN, FOX or FS1; with the option of streaming via the networks app. In my opinion the league should be able to easily draw an average of 2 million viewers per game, if not more. The Alliance did very well with what they had, but you need to admit that the new XFL has much better visibility than its predecessor.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"

The Right People in the Right Places

When we look back at the original XFL, there’s a lot of things we could point out for the reason it ultimately failed. One of its major issues was having true football minds in control of the product. Although there is still speculation that Vince McMahon may step down from the WWE when the XFL kicks off, but I wouldn’t count on it. This time around McMahon has put Oliver Luck in charge, and this isn’t his first rodeo.

Luck has prior experience building a spring football league as well as building up a new sports league. After leading the Fankfurt Galaxy and the Rhein Fire as General Manager, Luck was promoted to CEO of NFL Europe. Luck held that role until 2000, during which time he oversaw the league’s rebranding as NFL Europe. This was intended to strengthen the connection between the league and its parent, the NFL.

In 2005, he was named president of the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. Luck worked with the City and County to create a publicly funded downtown soccer stadium, BBVA Compass Stadium, which opened to much fanfare in March 2012. This is just just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Oliver’s skills. This is exactly the person that you need running a new sports organization, Luck along may be the sole reason that the XFL does not repeat history.

Beyond Luck, we have seen the league make a lot of significant hires; from Doug Whaley, Dean Blandino all the way to the coaches where we’ve seen Bob Stoops, June Jones and others put their faith into the league. The AAF looked impressive as well, the good news being is that we’ve seen a lot of former AAF coaches and executives transition into the XFL.

Quality and Pace of the Game

Let’s be honest, the original XFL may have been fun, but it was hardly good. The AAF proved that you could present a quality football game with non-NFL caliber players. The XFL looks to keep that model, and improve on it. We don’t know the official rule set of the new XFL just yet, but we do know that they are going for a fast paced game. Less Stall, More Ball; that’s the motto they’ve been throwing around.

Luck and McMahon have both stated, this new league will not be full of gimmicks. No nicknames on jerseys, no scramble for the ball; just traditional football, with a few twists. Rather than change the game of football, they are making tweaks to remove the non-quality plays. Basically, anything that doesn’t involve playing football, they want to minimize as much as possible. The league has stated that they are aiming for a roughly 2 1/2 hour game, 3 max with overtime.

The league held its own version of the NFL combine this summer in each of their home markets, which they dubbed the Summer Showcase. This season ticket depositors an opportunity to see what the new XFL is all about. We we’re lucky enough to attend the event in Houston and everyone in attendance that we spoke to was impressed, and in some cases surprised. We think there’s going to be a lot of people that tune into the first XFL game expecting a train wreck that will turn into long term fans. Commissioner Luck has stated we should be getting the finalized rule book late August/early September, so we’ll know soon enough.

Money = Time

Yes, we said that the answer wasn’t just money. But, it does have a lot to do with it still. Vince McMahon doesn’t like to fail, and he wouldn’t try the XFL again if he thought it would fail. He has already invested roughly $750,000,000 into the new league; which, is no chump change. When we look back at the AAF, the WFL and even the USFL their major undoing was capitol. Due to the fact that the leagues owns all of the teams, none of the teams will fold if the league stays afloat.

The other important thing that capitol brings, is time. Due to McMahon’s investments the XFL has had the time to do things right this time around. The AAF rushed to get on the field to beat the XFL to market, and it resulted in them folding prior to the seasons end. There was some hope when Tom Dundon saved the league after the second week, but because of that he had complete control to shutter the doors. The XFL doesn’t need to worry about that. From past interviews it seems that the new XFL is funded for at minimum three seasons. We think that gives this new league a fighting change, especially when you add in the broadcast partners.

At the time of publication we’re just 195 days away from kick off. The first game airs on ABC at 2pm EST on Feb 8, 2020; with a second game being aired on Fox later that afternoon. You can feel the excitement building from the fans. Team names/logos are coming, then we head into the draft and kickoff will be here before you know it.

This is not the first time McMahon has pulled from his WWE assets to fund the upcoming XFL. We reported back in March that McMahon had sold over 3 million shares of his WWE stock, a value of roughly $270 million. He also sold over $100 Million December 2017 when he had the initial plans to relaunch the XFL.

Ben Kercheval of CBS Sports is also reporting that the conversations with the AAF and the XFL actually go back to December of last year, prior to the AAF debut. It seems that the AAF hasn’t been as financially stable as they lead everyone to believe, which is very unfortunate for the players, coaches, employees and fans of the league.

Vince McMahon established Alpha Entertainment to completely separate the XFL from the WWE, but that doesn’t mean that the two companies weren’t going to work together. This is evident by recent SEC filings. It shows just how much money is going between WWE and Alpha Entertainment/XFL and it also details the arrangement between the two.

“As previously announced, Vincent McMahon organized and owns a majority of Alpha Entertainment, LLC (“Alpha”), which owns and operates the professional football league XFL. Under arrangements made at the time of its organization, WWE received, among other things, an equity interest in Alpha without payment by, or other financial obligation on the part of, WWE; WWE sold certain intellectual property rights relating to XFL to Alpha for a payment in the amount of $1 million; and WWE entered into a support services agreement under which WWE provides Alpha certain administrative support services on a cost-plus margin basis. During the year ended December 31, 2018, Alpha was billed approximately $1,305,000 for services under the administrative support services agreement, of which $474,000 was due at year end and subsequently paid.”

In summary:

WWE sold intellectual property rights to Alpha for $1 million

Alpha was billed over $1.3 million for WWE providing administrative support

Alpha paid WWE $474,000 for that administrative support

While the XFL does have its own Careers page on its website, WWE also has a job posting for an XFL position on its website. This could be part of the services agreement between WWE and Alpha/XFL as the latter gets up and running.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"
data-ad-slot=""
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

So, even though Alpha Entertainment was created to keep the XFL’s operations separate from WWE, the XFL is still leaning on its big brother named World Wrestling Entertainment.

McMahon was featured in this years Forbes’ list of billionaires coming in at #691 with $3.2 billion. Last year Forbes listed McMahon’s net worth at $1.7 billion meaning that The Chairman’s value increased by an impressive $1.5 billion in the last year. This is very interesting as during this time he cashed out $500 Million to re-boot the XFL. I’d say there should be no issues funding the new league with a bank account like this.

You can read Vince McMahon’s description as it appears on the list below.

“Vince McMahon is chairman and CEO of entertainment company World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which hauls in nearly $1 billion in annual revenue.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"

Yesterday Darren Rovell reported that Charlie Ebersol was being sued by former business partner Bob Vanech. XFL2k has obtained a copy of the lawsuit and have come across some interesting things of note.

The lawsuit claims that Bob Vanech and Charlie Ebersol collectively created the idea of XFL 2.0, which has become the Alliance of American Football (AAF). Vanech feels he is entitled to 50% of the AAF. The following should give some more clarity, directly from page two of the lawsuit:

1. This case is about the untold and complete story of how the Alliance of American Football (the “AAF”), a new professional football league, was conceived, founded, announced, and launched.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"
data-ad-slot=""
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

2. As early as May of 2017, Defendant Charles “Charlie” Ebersol (“Charlie Ebersol”) has been peddling a fictional tale regarding the genesis of the AAF that only a Hollywood storyteller could conceive. The truth is that Ebersol was one of two AAF co-founders that formed a joint venture or partnership agreement in furtherance of launching the AAF, and that he conspired with his father, Duncan “Dick” Ebersol, Keith Rabois, William “Bill” Polian, Thomas “Tom” Veit, and others, to co-opt and purloin fellow co-founder Robert Vanech’s 50% ownership interest and other rights and benefits through a series of deliberate, fraudulent, intentional, wrongful and deceptive acts, as well as oust him from the partnership/joint venture that became known as the AAF.

3. Plaintiff Robert Vanech (“Vanech”) is entitled to his 50% ownership interest in
Defendant Legendary Field Exhibitions LLC, d/b/a Alliance of American Football, a professional football league, that is now nearly three (3) weeks into its first season of games, and recently secured a $250,000,000 commitment in funding from businessman and owner of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, Thomas “Tom” Dundon, as a result, in part, of Vanech’s contributions to the business. Plaintiff is informed and believes that this further funding was structured in such a way as to grant Dundon and/or others equity in the AAF, which required Vanech’s consent given the 50/50 equity agreement Vanech had with Charlie Ebersol, as well as their agreement regarding how the business was to be structured and controlled. Vanech is further entitled to seek declaratory relief as to Defendant Ebersol Sports Media Group, Inc.’s role in any control or ownership of the AAF, which was born out of a joint venture or partnership agreement initially dubbed the secret code word for the business, “XFL 2.0,” then later “Project Phoenix.

In the filing, Vanech attached a copy of the AAF’s, then referred to as XFL 2.0, sales presentation that was to be used during pitches. The presentation outlines who they are, their corporate timeline, how they plan on acquiring the XFL rights from WWE, their original planned markets, their expansion plan, as well as some insight on how they wanted to distribute the games. I went through and pulled some notable slides which you can see below. If you would like to view the full filing, you can do so here.

WWE’s latest SEC filing noted the following about Vince McMahon’s importance to the brand:

The Unexpected loss of the services of Vincent K. McMahon could adversely affect our ability to create popular characters and creative storylines or could otherwise adversely affect out operating results.

In addition to serving as Chairman of our Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. McMahon leads the creative team that develops the storylines and the characters for our programming (including our television, WWE Network and other programming) and live events. From time to time, Mr. McMahon has also been an important member of our cast of performers. The loss of Mr. McMahon due to unexpected retirement, disability, death or other unexpected termination for any reason could have a material adverse effect on our ability to create popular characters and creative storylines or could otherwise adversely affect our operating results. Mr. McMahon has established Alpha Entertainment LLC, to explore investment opportunities across the sports entertainment landscapes, and Alpha Entertainment LLC plans to launch a professional football league in early 2020 . While he has provided the Company assurances that his focus on WWE will not be diverted by these efforts, any such diversion or perception of such diversion could adversely affect our operating results and could have a material adverse effect on our stock price.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"

Veteran wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer discussed the topic of Vince McMahon’s health on a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio. Apparently, Vince McMahon gets the minimal rest in a day due to the workload in the WWE. With this growing age, the working schedule can catch up to him, really quick. This worries Meltzer who is fond of the WWE CEO.

Here is what he had to say,

“It worries me because he’s been such a fixture but it’s like for better or worse it’s a big change when he’s not gonna be there. I’m not saying death or anything, but it’s a sign that the day is coming that he’s not gonna be there whether he gets old. Look, every time I see him on TV, I get worried. So yeah, there’s something to that.”

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-0089443260845542"

Meltzer continued stating that XFL has not started yet which would double the duties for Vinnie Mac. It would kick-start bringing a new direction to American Football League from 2020 onwards. Although XFL has its own team and a manager itself, Vince McMahon is also heavily involved with the creative inputs.

“I mean [the XFL] is Oliver Luck’s thing, but the reality is that Vince is gonna wanna have input and by virtue of wanting to have input you’re going to work hour and hours on it and he doesn’t have those hours.

He probably doesn’t have enough hours to run WWE anymore to be fair. To throw in the XFL as well it’s going to be a very tough period for him.”

It would really be a scary situation for Vince McMahon from next year onwards. We could barely see him getting involved in WWE programming once XFL gets underway. He did clarify that this schedule won’t be creating any conflicts with the WWE. But one man simply can’t take run two brands at the same time. We’ll see how The Chairman handles thing in due course as XFL inauguration gets closer.
