Former Atlanta Legend, Corey Griffin, says he is joining XFL as RB

Stephan Rachuk — Tue, 14 May 2019 01:46:57 +0000

Former Georgia Tech and Atlanta Legends Safety Corey Griffin tweeted earlier that he plans on joining the XFL as a running back. We have no other information backing this up other than him stating this publicly, but we here at XFL2k felt is was notable as we don’t see much player news…. yet at least.

Johnny Manziel open to play for the XFL

Stephan Rachuk — Fri, 19 Apr 2019 13:17:01 +0000

TMZ ran into Johnny Manziel as was leaving Craig’s in West Hollywood on Thursday. They asked about his football career and if he would be open to a run in the XFL.

“Any football,” 26-year-old Manziel said… “Any football options.”

TMZ followed up, “You just want to play football?” — to which Manziel replied, “That’s all it is man. Ball 24/7.”

When Vince announced the league, it was suggested that Manziel wouldn’t be eligible to play in the XFL due to his history of “criminality”. This stems from an allegation of domestic violence.

That charge was later dropped and recently, XFL commissioner Oliver Luck said the league would be open to signing Manziel.

“If he is able to meet our standards and if our coaches think he’s one of the top quarterbacks out there that can help us,” Luck said … “Certainly we have no reason not to believe he couldn’t be in the mix.”

Manziel also said that he is still going by Johnny, and left it by saying “Don’t believe everything you hear”.

Jeff Fisher spoke with XFL, not accepting coaching position

Stephan Rachuk — Thu, 18 Apr 2019 18:40:57 +0000

Former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher has been contacted by the XFL, but has not agreed to become the head coach of its Houston franchise or any other teams, he told Sports Illustrated‘s Charlotte Wilder.

Earlier Thursday, it was reported that Fisher was going to accept the role of Head Coach and General Manager of the upcoming Houston franchise.

Fisher, 61, coached in the NFL for 22 seasons. He last coached the Rams from 2012 to 2016. Prior to that, he coached the Oilers/Titans franchise from 1995 to 2010.

Most recently Fisher consulted for the AAF. In January, it was explained that Fisher didn’t coach any of the teams in the league because he was holding out in hopes of returning to the NFL as a coach.

Fisher even commented on all the “news” sites that jumped on this story without verifying their information with the following Tweet.

@JasonLaCanfora false news that I am headed to XFL Houston. Maybe get better sources? 🤣 Have a great Thursday. pic.twitter.com/X3cCYJOGPu

Bruce, Martz and Pinkel reportedly out as XFL St. Louis coaching candidates

Stephan Rachuk — Tue, 16 Apr 2019 19:57:22 +0000

Earlier today we learned that the XFL was going to hold a press conference in St. Louis just two days after today’s event in New York.

Martin Kilcoyne, Sports Director for local St. Louis Fox affiliate replied to a Tweet asking if we could possibly see Isaac Bruce, Mike Martz or Gary Pinkel taking the role, in which he replied “None of the above. Sadly”.

This information feeds right into the long standing rumor that Jim Haslett will be filling the role in STL. With only two days until the press conference I’m sure we’ll hear more, and we’ll keep you posted when we do.

None of the above. Sadly.

Gilbride hints that Eli Manning could be interested in the XFL

Stephan Rachuk — Tue, 16 Apr 2019 18:40:05 +0000

Kevin Gilbride has been Head Coach/GM of the XFL New York franchise than less than a day and he’s already making some noise. When asked by local sports reporter, Geoff Magliocchetti, on Gilbride’s thoughts on Manning in the XFL he just smiled and said “We’ll see!” and replied that he feels Eli would enjoy himself in the upcoming XFL.

As Magliocchetti mentions in his Tweet, Manning’s contract expires with the Giants after the 2019-20 season, which is one week prior to the XFL inaugural kickoff. Oliver Luck has stated in past interviews that in order to be eligible for the XFL draft, you would need to sit out the season for any fall leagues.

That being said, I would said it’s highly unlikely that we see Manning for the 2020 season, but if the XFL succeeds, there’s no reason we don’t see him in 2021.

Kevin Gilbride reportedly headed to XFL NY as Head Coach/GM

Stephan Rachuk — Mon, 15 Apr 2019 18:59:54 +0000

As we know, the XFL is holding a press conference in New York tomorrow to announce the Head Coahc/GM and President of the franchise. This time around information has been tight lipped, but it looks as if we have at minimum learned the identity of who will be Head Coach/GM.

According to Jay Glazer on Twitter, it looks as if the man taking the stage tomorrow will be Kevin Gilbride. He coached for twenty years in the NFL, spending seven years as the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants, with whom he earned two Super Bowl rings.

Gilbride was the head coach for the San Diego Chargers from 1997–1998 with an overall record of 6-16.

Don’t forget to tune in at 12pm EST on Twitter and Facebook to watch the press conference live.

Marc Trestman to be named Head Coach/GM of XFL Tampa Bay

Stephan Rachuk — Sat, 02 Mar 2019 16:29:09 +0000

XFL2k has learned that it is indeed not Jim Leavitt that will be taking the stage next week in Tampa Bay. We have discovered that Marc Trestman will be named the first Head Coach/GM of the XFL Tampa Bay franchise. The press conference takes place 11amEST March 5th, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay.

Trestman is a former NFL and CFL coach and is the only coach in Alouettes history to win back-to-back Grey Cups. We had originally speculated that it Jim Leavitt was up for the job, but there was a log of conflicting information. The news of Trestman does not comes as a shock, but it has been confirmed and we will see him next week at Raymond James Stadium.

Jim Leavitt headed to XFL Tampa Bay?

Stephan Rachuk — Fri, 01 Mar 2019 19:41:05 +0000

Earlier today the XFL announced a press conference at Raymond James Stadium, home of the future XFL Tampa Bay franchise. There has been some speculation that it would be Jim Leavitt, which recently left his role as defensive coordinator at Oregan.

Since the announcement we’ve seen (and heard) a few interesting developments. First, Leavitt himself posted on Twitter that he was heading out west, then down to “SEC Country”. The timing seems right, but it could just be a coincidence.

On the road again. Heading out west for a few stops before heading down to SEC country. Been a whirlwind! Making my way toward seeing Mom
— Jim Leavitt (@CoachJimLeavitt) March 1, 2019

That tweet alone started a lot more speculation, but not for long. Shortly after, Greg Auman of The Athletic posted that Jim Leavitt had indeed spoken with the XFL for the position, but was not going to be the person announced on March 5th.

On Tuesday, XFL will announce its head coach for Tampa franchise, which launches in February 2020. Former USF coach Jim Leavitt talked to commissioner Oliver Luck about the job, but he isn't their choice.
— Greg Auman (@gregauman) March 1, 2019

Could this just be a smokescreen? Will Leavitt join the three other coaches already announced? We have nothing solid at this moment, but we at XFL2k are hearing a lot of rumors that contradicts Auman. Tuesday is just a few days away, so we may learn something new between now and then.

Manziel banned from CFL… Exploring options in United States

Stephan Rachuk — Wed, 27 Feb 2019 21:37:29 +0000

Today the CFL posted on twitter that Johnny Manziel was released from the Montreal Alouettes and banned from signing another contract with any other CFL teams. The reason given was vague saying he “contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play” in the Canadian Football League.

🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨

The @MTLAlouettes have released QB Johnny Manziel.

— CFL (@CFL) February 27, 2019

Manziel has since commented on the subject thanking his former teammates and coach, specifically mentioning exploring his options in the United States. I think it’s very doubtful that he lands another gig in the NFL, but that leaves the AAF, AFL and XFL. Due to his past legal issues it seems that it is likely that he lands in the XFL, although in more recent interviews with Oliver Luck it seems the company may have backed off that stance. We’ll need to see what happens in the upcoming months.

I want to thank Coach Sherman, my teammates, and the CFL fans. My time there reestablished my love for the game of football and the work that goes into it. I look forward to exploring new options within the United States.

— Johnny Manziel (@JManziel2) February 27, 2019

Betting odds have started to come out on where Manziel will end up next, with the Alliance being the favorite. According to OddShark, this is what the odds look like at the moment:

AAF -275
XFL +600
AFL or IFL +600
CIF, NAL or AAL +850
NFL +1200

This may be due in part to the fact that it’s being reported that Manziel’s agent also made the following statement saying “Johnny decided to end his contract with the CFL. Johnny did not break any laws or violations, he is just more interested in playing in the AAF and a more “NFL” style of football to better his chances of playing in the NFL”

According to Johnny Football himself, this is not true. But, that is exactly what he would say if it were true…. Only time will tell, and we will probably know more sooner rather than later.

XFL confirms they have spoken with Kaepernick

Stephan Rachuk — Tue, 26 Feb 2019 00:43:13 +0000

According to Mike McCarthy an XFL spokesman confirmed Monday that Colin Kaepernick talked with executives about joining the league this past fall.

We’re told the XFL didn’t divulge any more details of the Kaepernick talks. We’ve previously heard that the former 49ers quarterback wanted at least $20 million to suit up for the AAF.

Kaepernick recently settled his collusion case against the NFL. His talks with both the XFL and AAF indicate he wants to play after a two-year absence. If the reports are true about his asking price, then I think it’s highly unlikely that we see Kaepernick in the XFL.
